Children and Self Esteem by Yafreicy Brito Martes
Our feelings will always determine the outcome of how we get things done, especially their quality. Therefore, I strongly believe that the topic of self-esteem should be introduced in schools at an early stage. Research has found that children with low self-esteem tend to do poorly and lack goals. As a result, this can lead to many consequences such as anxiety and depression. In some cases, it can go beyond the early years and affect the person in their adult life, if it is not addressed on time.
Neurobiology studies human behavior. It is stated that “the level of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain promotes success and also our coordination of self-esteem”. If kids have low self-esteem, they tend to be more aggressive and violent. The main function of serotonin is to maintain/stabilize your mood, sleep, digestion, sex desire, memory, etc. An imbalance in this hormone can cause psychological and physical problems.
The parents and schools (environment) play a huge role in the child personally. Parents make sure that they are offering their children healthy food and a healthy environment. And teachers make sure they encourage and motivate the students.
Maureen A. Manning argues that self-esteem should go hand in hand with academic skills.
Personally, I agree that self-esteem has a lot to do with the achievements children can have not only in school but in their personal daily life. When you have a high level of self-esteem you feel anything is possible and that you can accomplish any goal. On the other hand, if you have lower self-esteem you don’t feel capable of even doing the simplest thing, and all the negative thoughts come to your mind. People with low self-esteem tend to stick to only one way to solve a problem. If that one does not work, that is it, they don’t look for other possibilities and this makes them feel worse. Teachers’ curriculum should be based on improving not only the intellectual aspect of the student to their psychological aspect as well. Always provide good feedback and increase their self-esteem because that’s going to help them in their academic achievement and life success.
No matter where you are in life, know that it is never late to begin your journey into a healthy and balanced self esteem.
Until we meet again…
